Overview

Step behind the scenes of one of England’s finest Georgian townhouses, nestled in the heart of York.

Our Friday guided tours offer the chance to dive deep into the history of this fascinating house, its history and the families who lived here.

Originally the winter home of Viscount Fairfax, the house is a classical architectural masterpiece of its age, designed by York’s most distinguished eighteenth-century architect, John Carr. Fairfax Houses’ magnificent ceilings and lavishly decorated interiors make it a masterpiece of Georgian design.

The house was extensively adapted in the twentieth century into a cinema and dance hall, but then returned to its former glory by York Civic Trust in 1982-84.

You’ll discover the story of the house with a knowledgeable guide who will be on hand to answer any questions you may have, whilst exploring highlights of the exceptional Noel Terry collection of furniture, clocks, paintings and decorative arts (described by Christie’s as one of the finest private collections of the twentieth century).

Guided tours really are the best way to experience the glorious Fairfax House!

  • Your tour ticket includes general admission to the house for the year, so you can come back and explore our changing exhibitions. The house looks particularly stunning at Christmas.
  • If you have any questions or accessibility requirements prior to your visit please do not hesitate to contact a member of staff on 01904 655543 or by email at [email protected] and we will try our best to assist you.
